My name is Nina E. Wall and my focus is Illustration with a minor in Art History. My journey officially took off when I was in high school; I was taking courses in Philadelphia at the University of the Arts (UArts) back in 2017. Being brought to this opportunity by my high school professor, it scratched my curiosity to take my art in a new direction. I would take courses about character design and figure drawing. My take away from these courses was how important it is to understand anatomy. Attending courses at UArts helped me understand that to be a greater artist, gaining skills through observation and practice would help improve my work.
After taking independent classes outside of high school, I wanted to take my art seriously and attend college specifically for the fine arts. I began my journey of fine arts at Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC); understanding the fundamentals of traditional mediums and the academic thought process when having to write reports or critiquing art. After receiving my Associates in Fine Arts, I would transfer over to Stockton University. Coming to Stockton, I was already in a defeated position in my life. I could not decide whether to be fully committed to a BFA or stick with becoming an art teacher. In the very beginning of my Stockton journey, I felt much anxiety; there was this feeling of embarrassment.
How could I possibly make anything of myself with my art? What was my message? I was so harsh to myself I barely gave myself a chance to try. I knew little to no one on campus at the time and I was in a very isolated state of mind. I felt more familiar in the third semester, I grew a strong connection to faculty and students in the program. I began to develop my style that suited me and I felt my work was taking me in the right direction. I knew illustration was for me and I would not have gotten this far if it were not for my community, faculty, family and myself to get where I am today.
